Designing loop based UX for design tools

Most product UX is built around clear, linear flows: Step 1 leads to Step 2, which leads to Step 3, and finally to completion. It's predictable, finite, and comfortable. But AI tools don't usually work like that.
Using AI feels more like a loop than a line. You try something, see what comes back, adjust your input, and try again. There's no fixed endpoint. Instead, there are evolving results, shifting directions, and endless opportunities to iterate. That fundamental difference changes how we need to design.
Why Loops Matter
Loops are where creativity, learning, and insight happen. They're not a bug in the AI experience; they're a feature. When someone uses Midjourney or ChatGPT, they're not just executing a task. They're exploring possibilities, refining ideas, and discovering outcomes they didn't know they wanted until they saw them.
Traditional UX treats iteration as a failure state, something that happens when the user didn't get it right the first time. But in AI design, iteration is the primary mode of engagement. The question isn't whether users will loop; it's whether your design supports that loop gracefully.
Design Considerations for Loop-Based AI UX
Make iteration feel safe
Include undo, regenerate, and version history. Tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney have normalized exploration by making it expected, not risky. Users should feel confident experimenting without fear of losing good results or getting stuck in a dead end.
Support partial progress
Treat rough drafts and incomplete outputs as valid states, not failures. Notion AI keeps responses editable and embedded as part of your work, not separate from it. This acknowledges that AI output is often a starting point, not a finished product, and that's perfectly acceptable.
Give clear re-entry points
Make it easy to return, re-edit, or continue a previous step. Runway lets you remix and refine directly without needing to start over. Users shouldn't have to reconstruct context or repeat work just to pick up where they left off.
Let users compare versions
Support side-by-side outputs or version history. Image generators show multiple visual variations so you can branch creatively. Comparison isn't just helpful for choosing; it's essential for understanding what different inputs produce and learning how to guide the AI more effectively.
Normalize re-asking
Avoid copy that makes retries feel like mistakes. "Regenerate response" is a simple cue that trying again is part of the process, not evidence of system failure. Language matters. Frame iteration as exploration, not error correction.
Make the system feel responsive
Typing indicators in tools like Claude and ChatGPT help the system feel active, not stalled. Pacing matters when results vary. Users need reassurance that something is happening, especially when generation takes time or produces unexpected results.
Designing for the Rhythm of Discovery
AI UX should support the natural rhythm of creative work without rushing users to "done." That means resisting the temptation to optimize for task completion at the expense of exploration. Sometimes the best outcome emerges from the fifth attempt, not the first.
